چکیده

LARGE variations in the incidence of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) have been claimed to exist around the world [l, 21. It is important to establish the validity of geographic variation in CHD incidence as it provides clues to the causes and prevention of this disease. Vital statistics have shown a lower death rate from CHD among middle aged men in Puerto Rico and in the Honolulu Japanese than in the United States white population [3, 43. To investigate this finding prospective studies were begun in 1965 in Honolulu and Puerto Rico, and the results are compared here with those from the older Framingham Study. An effort is made to evaluate geographic differences with a uniformity of methodology and diagnostic criteria in representative samples of the three populations. An attempt is also made to determine if the CHD differences observed are explained by differences in some uniformly measured risk factors in the three population samples.

Diet and its relation to coronary heart disease and death in three populations.

Baseline 24-hour dietary recalls from 16,349 men ages 45-64 years who had no evidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) were obtained in three prospective studies: the Framingham Study (859 men), the Honolulu Heart Study (7272 men) and the Puerto Rico Heart Health Program (8218 men). These men were followed for up to 6 years for the first appearance of CHD or death. Men who had a greater caloric ...

The Framingham scores overestimated the risk for coronary heart disease in Japanese, Hispanic, and Native American cohorts.

P a t i e n t s The Framingham cohort included white participants without CHD. The validation cohorts included the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study (white and black participants), the Physicians’ Health Study (white men), the Honolulu Heart Program (Japanese-American men), the Puerto Rico Heart Health Program (Hispanic men), the Strong Heart Study (Native American participants), and th...

Validation of the Framingham coronary heart disease prediction scores: results of a multiple ethnic groups investigation.

CONTEXT The Framingham Heart Study produced sex-specific coronary heart disease (CHD) prediction functions for assessing risk of developing incident CHD in a white middle-class population. Concern exists regarding whether these functions can be generalized to other populations. OBJECTIVE To test the validity and transportability of the Framingham CHD prediction functions per a National Heart,...

Risk of hospitalized stroke in men enrolled in the Honolulu Heart Program and the Framingham Study: A comparison of incidence and risk factor effects.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Risk of death due to stroke in Japan is more than double the risk in the United States. It remains unknown why some ethnic groups are more prone to stroke than others. Our purpose was to compare the 20-year incidence of hospitalized stroke between Japanese-American men in the Honolulu Heart Program and white men in the Framingham Study. METHODS This was a 20-year follow...

Giant coronary aneurysms in a young adult patient with Kawasaki disease.

Kawasaki disease is an acute, self-limited vasculitis of childhood and the principal cause of acquired heart disease in children in several parts of the world. Its major morbidity and mortality is related to the development of coronary aneurysms. The long-term impact of this disease in adults is not known, however, clinically silent coronary artery aneurysms may be recognized after a sudden car...
